Chapter Eight

We rode until the sun was starting to fall, creating dark peaks and dangerous travel. Grim hadn’t spoken to me since our kiss. We just drove and left beacons. We hadn’t even stopped to eat again. My stomach was growling as we pulled the bike between two giant boulders. They blocked the wind that had kicked up a few minutes ago, pelting us with red sand. I took out the blanket from the pack and laid it on the ground. The ends had weights so it wouldn’t fly away and small lights so that we wouldn’t be in the dark. I glanced up at Grim. He placed a palm-size disc inside our rock valley and it lit up, keeping the growing darkness at bay. It was just enough so we could see and not let anyone roaming know we were here. I grabbed a vitamin bar and ate it as I continued to watch him.

Grim checked the bike over. He pulled off the seat and was pressing wires together, blowing sand out of other areas. It was like he was in a trance which was really interesting to watch. I smiled, savoring food for the first time in hours. He squeezed the tires, which were black like the old-fashioned kind. Grim turned on the tech. The bike lifted off the ground. He fiddled with something on the handlebars. I sat on the blanket, leaning my back against the rock. It was smooth here. I placed my hands on the back of my head, still observing. It took another five minutes or so. The sun fell lower and sent finger-like shadows across the quiet area.

Grim nodded like he was talking to himself, turned the bike off, then faced me. “What are you doing?”

I grinned. “Watching you.”

He didn’t respond. He grabbed a vitamin bar out of the sack at the edge of the blanket then sat next to me. I waited for him to finish before shifting to sit closer to him. “Want to kiss me again?”

Grim snorted.

I rolled my eyes. “Not even a little bit?” I pushed. “It’s too romantic to waste the moment. There is no one around for miles. Nothing here but stars and sand and us. I bet my moans would echo throughout the whole area.”

Grim reached up and brushed his long fingers through my wild hair. “Go to sleep, Valentine.” Then he rolled over with a grin and lay down facing the rock.

The humor was not shared. He was teasing me. I guess it was better than a cold reception. I crossed my arms over my chest and huffed. “Seriously?” Five years in prison and the first guy I’m attracted to had issues and won’t even kiss me good night? I slumped down on the blanket, feeling the self-warming kick on. It wasn’t really cold, but the wind had a chill to it. I stayed on my back, staring at the stars. They were brighter out here. The air was thinner, but pretty soon we would be able to travel all over Mars without any breathing problems.
